Girl love and the Russian band t.A.T.u. have piqued Mischa Barton's interest.

The former star of "The O.C." has signed on to star in Roland Joffe's upcoming film "Finding t.A.T.u," reports Variety.

Based on the novel by Russian author A. Mitrofanov, the coming-of-age drama centers on an American teen in Moscow who befriends a local girl with the same obsession: the Russian pop duo t.A.T.u.

Shantel VanSanten, Anton Yelchin, Alex Kaluzshky and Helena Mattsson have also been cast.

Production begins in Moscow later in June.

In 1999, Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova (with the help of savvy producers) formed the group t.A.T.u., best known for their deliberate lesbian image. Their hit song "Ya Soshla S Uma" ("I've Lost My Mind") played off this image, showing the girls in Catholic schoolgirl uniforms kissing each other.

Barton, 21, is best known for playing Marissa Cooper on FOX's "The O.C." Last season, her character died in a car crash. Her film credits include "Notting Hill," "The Sixth Sense" and the upcoming Black Plague comedy "Virgin Territory," inspired by "The Decameron."
