HISTORY announced today that Golden Globe® Award winner and Emmy® Award nominated actor Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment, Usual Suspects, Millers Crossing) will star as Earl Haraldson in the network’s first scripted series, VIKINGS, set to premiere in 2013. The announcement was made by Nancy Dubuc, President & General Manager, HISTORY.
VIKINGS will chronicle the extraordinary and ferocious world of the mighty Norsemen who raided, traded and explored during medieval times. It follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok, an historical figure, and the greatest hero of his age – and the gripping sagas of Ragnar’s band of Viking brothers and his family – as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes.
Earl Haraldson was the most important ruler in Ragnar’s district. A man of limited vision, he suspects Ragnar’s ambitions and goes head to head with him in a struggle for power and glory. Once a mighty warrior, the Earl, a mighty political leader in his own right, will take on Ragnar, his opposite in every way: a lowly farmer; a young man thirsting for knowledge, and a descendant of the gods.

NBC greenlit "Crossbones," a pirate adventure set in 1715 that is set to go into production this fall on a 10 episode order.
"Crossbones" is the brainchild of the aptly-named Neil Cross, who created the acclaimed British series "Luther" starring "The Wire's" Idris Elba.
According to an NBC release, "Crossbones" is an action-adventure series that leaves it unclear who the real villains are: the pirates of the British crown.
From the release:
"It's 1715 on the Bahamian island of New Providence, the first functioning democracy in the Americas, where the diabolical pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. Part shantytown, part marauder's paradise, this is a place like no other on earth - and a mounting threat to international commerce. To gain control of this fearsome society, Tom Lowe, a highly skilled undercover assassin, is sent to the pirates' haven to take down the brilliant and charismatic Blackbeard. But the closer Lowe gets, the more he finds that his quest is not so simple."
